Background

Achieving good health outcomes requires a purposive effort to improve health systems in the developing world - to develop, strengthen and expand platforms that assure the delivery and financing of priority health interventions. This is especially critical if the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4, 5 & 6 are to be achieved (MDG 4: reduce child mortality; MDG 5: improve maternal health; MDG 6: combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases).

Participants

This 5-day course is designed for health professionals working as policy makers, managers or implementers in low and middle-income countries or anyone interested in supporting health programmes.The interactive and participatory workshop, designed and conducted by highly qualified and experienced health program managers, will help participants identify areas where they can excel, and where they have opportunities for growth, in their life-long learning process.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and main functions of management as applied to the health sector
  • Acquire appropriate knowledge and skills in:
  • Analysing national and local health systems;
  • Organising, planning and managing health services;
  • Supervising, monitoring and evaluating of health-care services;
  • Designing and conducting health systems research.

Topics

  • Strategies, frameworks and tools developed by UN agencies and international partners for improving and managing health programmes including MCH, RH, HIV, etc.;
  • Rights-based approach and gender programming;
  • Sociocultural determinants of health;
  • Conducting situation analysis;
  • Organizing and planning health services;
  • Supervision of health services;
  • Monitoring and evaluation of health care services;
  • Operations and health systems research;
  • Application of WHO Strategic Approach for improving the quality of health services;
  • Improving the quality of health-care services in resource-poor settings.

Format

  • The course includes instructor presentations, case studies, individual and group exercises and group presentations.
  • The medium of instruction will be in English.

Facilitators

Our HPM Facilitators come from our wide network of experts and professionals who have solid international development experiences from Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. All of them have worked with either Government, UN agencies, Development Banks, NGOs or combination of all agencies in various capacities, including management of country programmes.

Course Fee

$1,800 USD Inclusive of lunches and snacks during the course, course materials and a certificate of participation. Please note that this does not cover visa, accommodation and travel costs.
